Ginseng Good for Colds and Coughs?

A recent Canadian Research Study Group found that Ginseng could reduce the incidence of colds for 1 in 10 people and also reduce the severity of the cold.
This was a study carried out by the University of Alberta and the Canadian Medical Association. A response by Doctors from Great Britain seemed to suggest that evidence in the UK was anecdotal.
As people on average have at least 2 colds per year, any extra measures to prevent this would be warmly welcomed in both the population at large and the Medical fraternity.
In most peoples minds Ginseng is more associated with increasing energy and sex drive but it seems it may be one of those multi-purpose type herbs. If the Ginseng is working to either prevent or reduce the severity of colds it is thought it may be having effects on the body’s immunoglobin (antibody type proteins).
One thing to be considered before taking Ginseng is the safety of the product. Most Medical Study Groups think that further in depth research is needed to be sure of its safety. At the moment it is advised that anyone with diabetes or hypertension and pregnant women do not take the herb.
