Recent ADHD Research shows Evidence of Brain Development Link in Boys

Filed under: Natural Remedies — admin @ 3:14 am

Recent Research in Queensland Australia has found strong evidence that ADHD in young males is due to the way the brain develops.

Dr Ross Cunnington - a neuroscientist stated that there seemed to be something in the way the brain developed in young males which allowed the combined form of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD-CT) to develop.

Attention Deficit Disorder is a condition which is found in approximately 4% of young children

The study was carried out on a group of boys between 8 - 12 years old. The scientists led by Dr Cunnington at University of Queensland used fMRI to look at the how the brain worked for the boys as they carried out certain mental work.

The imaging was primarily of the parietal lobe of the brain which is the most active area of the brain when something happens to distract someone from the mental work which they are doing.

The pre-frontal and parietal lobes of the brain are vital to maintain the focus necessary to complete mental tasks.

This work could strengthen the idea that ADHD is caused by a condition found naturally in certain individuals, and consequently not a product of poor parents.

Often ADHD becomes less of a problem as a person gets older and there are many natural therapeutic treatments which reduce the severity of the condition.

Link between Lung Cancer and Arthritis of the Knee?

Filed under: Natural Remedies — admin @ 3:52 am

A report from the Annals of Rheumatic Disease stated that in a study
with over 6,000 patients suffering from various rheumatic disorders during 2005,
approximately 5% had arthritis of the knee. And approximately 2% of them had cell
lung cancer (small cell). These were men in middle age who had smoked heavily
throughout their lives.

After surgery on their cancer, where the cancerous areas were removed, the knee arthritis went away.

This type of cancer in about a fifth of cases, spreads to the bone structure.

The study stated that no actual link had yet been established between the two diseases.

Ginseng Good for Colds and Coughs?

Filed under: Natural Remedies — admin @ 10:39 am

A recent Canadian Research Study Group found that Ginseng could reduce the incidence of colds for 1 in 10 people and also reduce the severity of the cold.

This was a study carried out by the University of Alberta and the Canadian Medical Association. A response by Doctors from Great Britain seemed to suggest that evidence in the UK was anecdotal.

As people on average have at least 2 colds per year, any extra measures to prevent this would be warmly welcomed in both the population at large and the Medical fraternity.

In most peoples minds Ginseng is more associated with increasing energy and sex drive but it seems it may be one of those multi-purpose type herbs. If the Ginseng is working to either prevent or reduce the severity of colds it is thought it may be having effects on the body’s immunoglobin (antibody type proteins).

One thing to be considered before taking Ginseng is the safety of the product. Most Medical Study Groups think that further in depth research is needed to be sure of its safety. At the moment it is advised that anyone with diabetes or hypertension and pregnant women do not take the herb.

What female MD’s think about the Menopause

Filed under: Natural Remedies — admin @ 8:28 am

In a recent statement, Dr Shelley Ross past president of the Fed. Medical Women of Canada said that many women are unsure about HRT but there’s not a lot of scientific data about Natural Alternatives. She commented on the way that HRT usage had plummeted in the last ten years and didn’t think it would ever recover to the levels before the Health Scares about HRT emerged about 5 years ago.

Dr Andrea Swan, an author of “Transitions Through The Perimenopausal Years” said that herbal remedies are worth trying if women are aware of any side effect risks. She also said that she herself didn’t use either HRT or Herbal Cures when she experienced the Menopause.

British Medical Boffins report Natural and Herbal Treatment Success

Filed under: Natural Remedies — admin @ 7:56 am

It was recently reported on the BBC news that experts from King’s College London University have reported that natural and herbal treatments worldwide may have the ability to help such severe illness as cancer or diabetes.

Mentioned was curry leaf tree from India, with references to diabetes.

The products investigated were diabetes treatments from India, wound healing from Ghana and most surprisingly natural cancer medicines from Thailand and China.

What was said:

Patients suffering from diabetes do not produce sufficient insulin required for rapid rises in blood glucose. Blocking the production of alpha-amylase and the slowing breakdown of starch, leads to an even production of glucose into the blood from the gut.

It would seem that the curry leaf tree product can produce these changes, medical researchers are investigating which individual products on the curry leaf tree are responsible.

This could be a major breakthrough for those suffering from diabetes. Other herbal products mentioned above are being investigated in the same way.
